Our dear Mum passed away peacefully in the early morning of Thursday, November 28, 2019 at the Perley-Rideau Care home where she had been a resident for the past eight years.

Daphne Nancy Thelma Hauser (nee Dudley) was born in London England, the daughter of Frederick and Elizabeth Dudley and younger sister to Jack, Jo, Joan, Barbara, Mary and Des and older sister to Doll, Beryl and Tony. She later became the loving wife of Gordon Hauser and they immigrated to Canada with their four children in 1955. Sadly after 62 years of marriage Gordon died in 2005. Together they had 6 children: Vincent Hauser (died 1958), Jo Hauser (Nora), Ian Hauser (Ann) pre-deceased Mum in 2015, Gay Osler (Stephen), Elizabeth Hauser (died in infancy) and Tony Hauser (died in 2018).

Mum was a wonderful Muma to 8 grandchildren: Lisa Hauser, Donovan Hauser, Patty Stevenson, Julie Jones, Jessica Shaw, Danny Brown, Charlotte Osler and Tabitha Osler and 17 great-grandchildren: Brett and Brooke Hauser, Haley and Cooper Campbell, Samuel, Wesley and Quentin Jones, Willa and Waylan Shaw, Ben, Andrew, Travis, Jordan and Nick Stevenson, Jacob Brown, Charli Robins and Miles Osler-Hamal and 5 great-great grandchildren: Jayden, Alex and Mitchell (Ben’s children) and Aiden and Haley (Jordan’s children) all of whom she adored. Mum loved babies and children but we had to share her with many other children who she at times cared for, educated and advocated for during her long life.

Round Lake Resort, our cottage business, was the centre of her summers. The guests who rented the cottages returned year after year and became friends. Their children grew up, had families and still come back to the lake. Everyone who knew Daphne will remember her joy of life, her accepting nature and her passion for caring. Mum’s work life began in London following graduation from Art School. Her volunteer life began as a young woman as she dodged bombs in the London Blitz. When Gordon found work in Canada as an art teacher she left her loving siblings and quickly connected with a new community. She found work at the Pembroke Public Library and opened up a children’s section with weekly activities and films. Once we moved to Ottawa Mum taught Art classes at the National Museum and evening classes for the Ottawa Board of Education. When Tony was born Mum became a key participant in the Family Alliance of Ontario who were caregivers of the developmentally delayed. This focus led to teaching basic literacy to Adult Developmentally Disabled and in 1996 Daphne received an Ontario Community Action Award for outstanding contributions to Ontario.

Mum volunteered with youth as soon as she arrived in Canada and continued to volunteer in many capacities as well as serving on the Board of the Canadian Down Syndrome Society. A tireless advocate for youth, the disadvantaged and the developmentally delayed Mum never gave up and her courage has taught us all how persistence softened by compassion can change lives. We would like to thank Mitzi Hauser, Margaret Terrett and other family members for their many visits to Mum and special thanks to the staff of the Perley-Rideau Veterans Health Centre for the exceptional care and compassion they provided to Mum and the rest of us.

Daphne’s family requests memorial donations to the Perley-Rideau Veterans Health Centre in her honour at www.perleyrideau.ca Family and friends are invited to her Funeral on Thursday, December 19, 2019 to Trinity Anglican Church, 1230 Bank St (at Cameron) for a service at 3p.m. followed by a reception in the parish hall.
