David was born in Smiths Falls, Ontario, and was raised by his dad from the time he was a toddler. In 2005, his family moved from Kingston, Ontario to New Brunswick. David returned to Ontario after graduating from Hartland Community School in 2013.
David is a son, a brother, a grandchild, a nephew, a cousin, a friend, and more. He is loved. We remember him as a kind, handsome, and charming young man who was so proud to be a big brother.
As a little person, he was all boy and loved cars, sports, Yu-Gi-Oh!, amusement parks, waterslides, and music. David played baseball, hockey, and golf, and “Hawnie” was a fearless goalie on his high school soccer team. He was a devoted Leafs fan and thought his little brother should be named “Mats”.
David perfected the belly flop. He loved chocolate cake, being at the beach, and he ate his eggs sunny-side up. On Saturday mornings, he and his dad would ride their bikes for hours along the Ottawa Parkway – it was hard to wear him out. He did everything fast. On his first ski trip, he tore down a double black diamond run, exhilarated and grinning, wobbling on the very edge of control and loving every minute.
David’s adult life was difficult, but his struggles do not define who he is. We are very grateful for the many people who have cared for David with patience and compassion, treated him with respect and dignity, were kind, and tried to help. Thank you.
David’s mortal life ended at Ottawa General Hospital following an unintentional overdose. Years ago, David chose to be an organ donor, and that decision became a gift to many individuals and their families. Though his death is a tragedy, his legacy is one of life. His heart continues to beat, his lungs continue to breathe, and his generosity lives on in those he helped heal.
David is lovingly remembered by his parents, John and Katherine Hann, with Rebecca, Daniel, William, and Graydon; his grandmother, Lorraine Hann; his uncle Brent Hann; his aunts Jane Fleming and Wendy McKenney (John); his cousins Joe Hann (Liza), Ryan Fleming (Sabrina), and Alyssa Fleming; as well as “so many” Beacom, Watt and Young relatives in Alberta and British Columbia. He also leaves behind children who are acknowledged with love.
We take comfort in knowing that David has been reunited with his Poppa, William Hann. The hard and heavy things David carried for so long have finally been set down and will be gently sorted out. He can now rediscover security, rest, peace, and joy – things that were so difficult for him to hold onto in mortality. David has gone Home.
The family has made private arrangements with no formal service scheduled. In lieu of flowers or donations, we ask that you show appreciation to some of the people in your community who do very hard things every day. Deliver a meal, a note or a plate of cookies (David loved chocolate chip) to a teacher, police officer, counsellor, public defender, social worker, probation officer, guard, shelter worker, or health care professional. Just Be Kind.
Everyone is someone’s baby.
The worth of every soul is great in the eyes of God.
