Major André (Andy) Raymond Powers
Passed away peacefully on Friday October 17th, 2025. He was born in Ottawa on May 18th, 1946. He loved the city and spent most of his life in it. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Carleton University in 1969 and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Ottawa in 1972. In 1973, he articled for the Director of Investigation and Research in the Department of Consumer and Corporate Affairs and during 1974, he was admitted to the Bar of Ontario as a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada. Having previously been a cub, sea cadet and a member of the Canadian Forces Army Reserve, in 1974 Andy decided to enroll in the Canadian Forces Regular Force as a legal officer serving in the office of the Judge Advocate General (JAG). The majority of his postings during his career were to National Defense Head Quarters in Ottawa. He was also posted to CFB Montreal where he met his beloved wife Alice and later to CFB Borden and CFB Winnipeg. Andy and Alice had two sons, Michael and Joseph. He retired from the Canadian Forces in 2000 and was subsequently employed in Ottawa as a civilian military grievance analyst until 2002 when he chose to retire permanently.
Andy liked to travel, play sports, collect coins and stamps, play cards and board games, listen to music, read, quote poetry and most of all fish. He frequently mentioned that he was extremely fortunate to have had a blessed life consisting of supportive parents Claire Adele (nee Beaulieu) and Nicholas David Powers, close family members and good friends he made and met during life’s journey. He was very thankful for his strong Roman Catholic faith, career choice, many happy memories and his years of good health.
Unfortunately, in 2012, Andy was diagnosed with a rare muscle wasting disease called Inclusion Body Myositis (IBM). Although his physical mobility over the years became increasingly restrictive his mind remained strong and active. He, with Alice’s love and extensive physical and moral support, enjoyed many good years together until his passing.
Andy wished all who knew him a long, happy, healthy and productive life.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Thursday October 30th at 11am at St Maurice Parish. (4 Perry St, Ottawa, ON K2G 1K5)
