It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our sweet mother, Elizabeth (Betty) Salewicz, just two months shy of her ninetieth birthday. Her kindness and love of life will be missed by her five children, eight grandchildren and the countless friends she made in Montreal, Calgary and Ottawa. We will celebrate her life during a memorial service at First United (347 Richmond Road, Ottawa) on Friday, April 12, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Betty’s name to Ottawa’s May Court Hospice or Doctors Without Borders Canada.

    Your mom was very much on my mind this weekend as the Calgary Celiac Assoc celebrated yet another successful Gluten Free Stampede Breakfast. Your mom, with her band of Community Kitchen foodie friends, was determined that we would have our own breakfast so that we, too, could be a part of the festivities. From ~100 at the first event on 8 July 2000, it has grown to more than 1000 attending this year. I never think of a stampede breakfast without thinking of your mom. She was feisty and determined when it came to celebrating Celiac Disease. She and I did a lot of education advancement while she was still here in Calgary.

    I’m sorry for your loss. I met Betty at the Ottawa Celiac Assoc and it was always nice talking with her. She was kind hearted and a sweet woman. She will be missed at the meetings.
