Charles MacAulay Strong

Jun 13, 2022

Charles Strong died peacefully at home in Ottawa, at the age of 79, on June 13th 2022. Charles courageously dealt with lung cancer for the last 5 years, and bravely chose to face the end on his terms, with a medically-assisted death (MAID). His beloved wife Joan Simkins and one of his dearest friends were by his side, with other close family nearby.

Charles was born in England as the eldest son of Helen and Sidney Strong. He attended the University of Wales, where he met his first wife Gillian Strong (Sam Iyengar). They moved to Canada together in 1965 and have two children, Rachael Strong (André Ouellette) and Andrew Strong (Karen Blake-Strong). Charles met Joan in 1976 and they shared their love and many travels together over the past 40+ years. Together, they have one daughter, Emily Simkins-Strong. Charles has two grandchildren, Chloe Ouellette and Evan Strong. Charles also leaves behind his younger brother Julian Strong (Margaret Strong), his sister-in-law Linda Clippingdale (Rick Clippingdale), and several nieces and nephews. Family and friends will remember Charles fondly for his sharp mind, witty sense of humour, and talents in the kitchen, among many other qualities.

Charles and the family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Dr. Shamim Taherzadeh, for the exceptional care and compassion with which he treated Charles over the last few years.

A celebration of life with family and close friends will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Charles’ name to the Canadian Cancer Society would be much appreciated.
