ASKWITH, Leyna Nicole

Jul 02, 2021

Leyna Nicole Askwith, nee Reinhart, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2021. While only in her 39th year, Leyna led a life full of love and joy, including 9 wonderful years with her wonderful son.

Leyna was the beloved friend and companion of her husband of 10 years, Christopher, and was a much-loved Mummy to her son, Colin. Close to her heart were her parents Paul and Patrice, her siblings Darren, Brian (Emily), Brett (Sam), Dustin (Michaela), and Carly, in-laws Michael and Nanci, and countless friends and relations. While all the children of her family and friends were much loved, special mention must be made of Kaleb, Julie, Abigail, Lachlan, Emma, Finn and Gideon, Ogden, and the Doodles Daycare super friends.

Leyna grew up in Toronto and at her parents’ cottage outside of Thornbury. Favourite cottage pastimes were skiing in the winters, swimming in the summers, and bicycling into town to read voraciously at the library. The eldest of six, Leyna provided endless care and guidance to her siblings. She moved to Ottawa to study history at Carleton University, an interest she maintained throughout her life. She worked at assorted small museums across town and then at the Wine Shop (formerly Peller Estate Vineyards), followed by Starbucks, making many fast friends during her time at each workplace.

Marriage and parenthood brought new joy into Leyna’s life, above all else Colin, along with new friendships. She ran Doodles Daycare at home for a few years before returning to the Wine Shop.

Although the last few years of her life were marked by protracted illness, Leyna was always a beacon of joy, and seeing Colin never failed to bring a smile to her face. The tightknit family that Leyna, Christopher, and Colin built provided her with a great sense of warmth.

Among her many gifts were her boundless capacity for love, her ability to bring others together in friendship, her skills for organization, cooking, and handicrafts, and her great enjoyment and knowledge of fine wine.

Her loved ones wish to thank the Ottawa Hospital and Mt Sinai Hospital (in Toronto) for their excellent care of Leyna over the past four years, and to the palliative care team at Elisabeth Bruyère who kept her in good spirits and comfortable during the final weeks of her life. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to these organizations or to your local cancer foundation.

In light of current public health orders, and in accordance with Leyna’s wishes, a public memorial will not be held. Her family and friends will attend private gatherings in her honour over the summer.
