Our vigil is over. The last piece of our love has returned to stardust.

This morning, a beautiful, mild December day, Gloria could hear the birds singing outside her window. You could see their song reflected in her welling eyes, back into the knowing of a saddened daughter ever by her side. Gloria, small and frail, much like the delicate birdsong that lifted her spirit from the bounds of the physical world today.

No more does she need to fight. No more does she keep the weight of worry.

Gloria is set free, and we are sad but joyous in the knowledge that her suffering is no more.

Gloria leaves her loving husband, who cared for her as she returned to a childlike state, back to where she started, hushed by a lullaby only she could hear.

Her final joy, her great-granddaughter Lennon “Lenny,” breathed fresh life into the corners of a mind filled with the collected memories of over eighty-eight years.

What remains is to live—first in honor of her last breath, then finally for ours.

Gloria, beloved wife of Norman Cotter. Loving mother of Perry Andre (Heather Saunders), Darryl Andre (Joe Leonard-Boland) and Karen O’Neil (John Buss). Cherished grandmother to Shane O’Neil (Jessie) and Rachel O’Neil. Adored great-grandmother to Lennon “Lenny” O’Neil. Dear sister of Jeanne Leger (née Gauthier), husband Jacques Leger. Predeceased by brothers Rheal “Ray” Gauthier and Rolland “Rolly” Gauthier. Loving godmother to Edna Poirier and Renée Leger.

Gloria also leaves behind her stepchildren Cindy Rochon (Dave), Jeff Cotter and Christine Blouin (John) and step-grandchildren Jordyn Rochon, Karly Blouin and Dayna Blouin.

With heartfelt gratitude to Jen, Gloria’s neighbour, dear friend, and steadfast support during her hospital stay and time in the elders’ home.

Special thanks to Shannon Blackler, Gloria’s palliative care nurse who became family, and to all of the staff and friends of Gloria’s final home, Extendicare Longfields Manor Long-Term Care Home.
