Sep 23, 1952 - Sep 16, 2025
Lori Anne Kaluski, age 72, passed away peacefully on September 16th, 2025 surrounded by close family and friends. She leaves behind an immaculately decorated apartment, a wardrobe to die for, 56 boxes of juicy fruit gum, enough roasted peanuts to choke a horse, and a beloved black cat named Freddie (not Fred).
Lori is survived by her daughters Alison Melia (Jamie Clarke) and Rachel Hutchinson (Genesis Guzman), her grandchildren Madeline, Noelia, Lumi, Charlotte and Liam, her sisters Kim, Debbie, Sharon, and Connie, and, of course, the man in her life—Freddie.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Steve and Irene, her sister Lynne, and her nephew Sean.
Lori graduated from Sir Wilfrid Laurier High School, then went on to receive her Bachelor of Arts from Carleton University and her Bachelor of Education from Ottawa U. She spent 35 years teaching with the Ontario Catholic School Board, where she shaped young minds with compassion, style, and the occasional existential threat (“Does your mother own a black dress?” and “Does your mother have other children?” were perennial favourites).
Lori loved many, many things, including music, dancing, fashion, interior design, Starbucks caramel lattes, juicy fruit gum, BBQ chips, pool running, Caesar salads, movies, Teddy Swims (yes, really), and, above all, her family.
Lori was always the best dressed in every room she entered, including (somewhat controversially) at both her daughters’ weddings. She was also the funniest. During her last days, when asked if anyone could fetch her anything at the hospital, she said “a billionaire with a bad heart.” Alas, no one on the stroke unit fit the bill.
Lori hated practical shoes, cold feet, children’s clothing with cartoon characters on it, and being told what to do. She was always herself, right up until the very end. She will be missed terribly.
Tremendous and heartfelt thanks go to the staff at Ottawa Civic Hospital, but especially Samir, who provided far more than nursing care for Lori during her last days, and Dr. Baeva, who was a comfort to Lori’s family during a difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ottawa Memory Clinic or the Alzheimer Society of Ontario in Lori’s memory.
Friends and family are invited to the funeral service at 10AM on Tuesday, September 23, 2025 (Lori’s birthday) at St. Joseph’s, 174 Rue Wilbrod Street, Ottawa, Ontario. We ask that you please wear your very best in Lori’s honour. She would have expected nothing less.
We leave you with one of Lori’s famous quotes: “Try not to miss me.”

I had the privilege of knowing Lori through our mutual friend Diane. It was always a pleasure to spend time with Lori whose humour and insights turned every time together into a party! Her twice-daily water running regimen was so impressive — an inspiration to us to keep moving, and keep on going. She will be missed. My sincere condolences.
I am so sorry to stumble on this very sad news. You will think this is crazy, but Lori was my grade 5 teacher. She introduced me (and our class) to Joni Mitchell. She was such an inspiration for me. Alison, you will not remember this, but I babysat you when you were a baby.
My very deepest condolences to you and your family.
That’s such a great story to read about my mom this morning, Catherine! Thanks so much for sharing this. I’m not surprised to hear she was introducing her students to cool artists, lol! Sounds like she was a fun teacher back then!
I am very sorry for your loss Alison and James. My heart goes out you both and your families. Thinking of you.
I had the privilege of knowing Lori since my earliest childhood, thanks to her friendship with my parents. She had a special talent for perceiving beauty and humour that the rest of us didn’t always immediately see, and she was generous in sharing her unique wisdom, warmth, stylishness, good humour, and love of life with all around her, to the extent that they couldn’t help rubbing off on you. You were never too young or too old to be her friend, her kindness had no boundaries. Lori, thank you for being such a phenomenal friend to my family, in particular to my mother Diane. Rest in peace and know that your memory will remain a blessing without end. We will miss you very much!
So beautifully put Sean! Diane was Lori’s favorite person to spend time with. She felt a deep connection to your mom! We grew up with two exceptional women and I feel blessed to still have you and Steph in my life today.
At the airport on our last trip to Boston to visit Rachie, Genesis and Noelia! I wish we could have made that one last trip, Mom!
Your funeral was really beautiful. I think you would have approved.
I’ll be talking to you from time to time and I hope that you are listening. I feel you near me. Xo I love you so so so much.
Dear Alison , Jamie and family,
My deepest condolences on the passing of Lori. I will miss her cute little face sitting across from me at the family holiday dinners and her input to the various topics of conversation. She was always so fashionably dressed. She will be missed.
Hugs to all,
Lynda
Love you to the moon and back a gazillion times.
I love this photo of us after you ran the Ottawa marathon. My heart hurts, mom. I miss you so much.
Lori, You came into my life at Divine Infant School. Your sense of humour, wit, compassion and friendship left an everlasting impression in my heart and soul.
« I will try not to miss you and promise to wear my very best outfit on September 23rd-when we gather for your celebration of life, and legacy you leave behind.
