Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Margaret emigrated to Canada as a small child. She was a Mother, Grandmother, Sister and Daughter. Margaret graduated from McDonald College of McGill University in Teaching. She was also a Registered Realtor, Certified Auctioneer, Special Education Teacher and Level 1 English Equestrian Instructor. Margaret finished her professional career with the Federal Government, Natural Resources Canada, Office of Energy Efficiency as a Program Coordinator of The Municipal Green Funds. She was an original, long-time resident of Beaverbrook Kanata. Some will remember her as the clown character Popcorn Patti. Margaret’s love of all animals and particularly horses. It led her to becoming a horse owner, trainer, involved in Showing, Eventing and then becoming a member of the Ottawa Valley Hunt. She loved the outdoors and animals, both of which were always close by from downhill skiing to birdwatching, to her dogs and horses. Her garden was also a place of serenity. One of her greatest joys was singing. This led her to working out-reach with St. Paul’s Anglican Church, writing music and playing guitar. Her strong faith and deep belief in God permeated every aspect of her life.

Margaret had a zest to live a full life and to love fully. Her artistic side was expressed in her artwork, the way in which she dressed, her smile, singing, dancing, a true spirit of her Scottish heritage and highland roots.

As per Margaret’s wishes, she requested that we wear Bright Colours, or a dark color accompanied by a bright red or purple scarf.

I met Margaret in Kanata many years ago. We both joined Kanata Theatre at the same time and we were both cast in our first play together! Since that first play we appeared onstage together many times as well as working backstage. Margaret was so much fun to be with. What I remember is her beautiful singing voice, her infectious laugh but especially her caring and thoughtful way with everyone. She was such a gentle person and will be missed by so many. So many cherished memories of a very special person.

Margaret joined us in South Africa to celebrate my mom’s 80th birthday and we are so glad she did! That was 6 years ago and the first time many of her SA cousins met her. She was so full of energy and life and a beautiful person inside and out.
