It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Nickolas Haramis at the age of 88. Born in Renfrew and raised in Pembroke, Nick lived his entire life in the Ottawa area. Nick was an upbeat, charismatic, jovial man who was always quick with a pun or “Dad” joke. He was never deterred in making these jokes no matter how often people held their nose after the telling. Nick had many passions in life that gave him great joy: travel, music, poetry, wine, cooking and, most of all, photography. This last joy was truly his raison d’etre. Nick picked up a camera as a teenager and never put it down until the very last years of his life. He turned his passion into a long career starting at The Pembroke Observer then onto CJOH News in Ottawa and ending at CBC National News as a Senior Parliamentary Video Journalist. In retirement, he continued his love of photography combined with travel to fill many days capturing nature on film.
Nick derived much joy from the people in his life. He was the oldest of four siblings (Peter, Mary and Celina). He married Carolyn Poupore (deceased 2025) in 1959. They had three children, Katherine (deceased 2020), Laura and John. He also had a long-term devoted relationship with Esther Peterson (deceased 2017) and was a central figure in the life of Esther’s four children, Helen, Carol, Sheila and Sally. These two families gave Nick (Papou) 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren (so many happy faces to be the subjects in his pictures). In the last years of Nick’s life, he lived at Stonehaven Retirement in Kanata. Nick and his surviving family are grateful to the home and all the friends he made there. Special thanks and appreciation to the dearest of these, Mary. Nick was a man of few words (mostly jokes) and always a smile and positive attitude. He will be missed.

Many childhood memories of my oldest brother. Skipping school and being found playing pool, learning to play the clarinet and the saxophone and then he and his fellow musicians had their own band. Rehearsals held many times in our parents basement and being well fed by my mother. I miss him and
his “jokes”.
