• In loving memory of Mr. Nicolaas (Co) Simon de Jong

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Nicolaas (Co) Simon de Jong, in his 89th year, in Ottawa, ON.

Loving husband of Anna for 61 years, father to Linda (Mike), Ken (Stacey), and Sharon (Alex), and grandpa to Kalen, Kendon, Sydney, Ryan, Julian, Riley and Luka.

Co was born in Schagen, The Netherlands to loving parents Johannes and Veronica de Jong and was raised with two brothers (both deceased) and four sisters. At the age of 27, he emigrated to the Hamilton area, where he owned and operated Co de Jong Electric Ltd. In 1979, he moved his family to the Parry Sound area, operating Otter Lake Marina for many years until moving into town to continue his contracting business. Upon retirement, Co, with Anna moved to Barrie and then more recently to Ottawa to a condominium overlooking the Ottawa River, which he loved. He always enjoyed being near water.

He was attracted to Canada for its rugged nature, enjoying fishing, hunting and camping with his family in tents, small trailers, and a fifth wheel RV. He liked to read the Toronto Star every day, played the piano and enjoyed watching hockey, boxing and especially the Tour de France bicycle race on TV. He and Anna participated in a seniors bicycle group, which was for both activity and social gathering.

Known for his friendliness, positivity and outgoing nature, he held his love for his family as a priority and was very proud of his children and grandchildren. Co and Anna enjoyed many years of retirement, traveling across Canada, the US, Alaska, Europe, the Caribbean, and back to Holland countless times to visit family and friends.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation will be done privately with a small family service to scatter his ashes in Georgian Bay. A Celebration of Life is being planned in Ottawa which will be by invitation.

As an expression of sympathy and in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Co’s memory to the Harvest Share Community Food Programs in Parry Sound.
