Always remembering
\nThe cyclotron in Colombo
\nMotorcyclist with goggles
\nCircling and rising<\/p>\n

In a cylinder of wood
\nTil the sheer momentum
\nKept him horizontal<\/p>\n

You had a momentum<\/p>\n

All your own<\/p>\n

Linked to nature
\nAnd Roller skating in Nuwara Eliya
\nNear the old hotel
\nYou reading Eloise in Moscow
\nIn this special time<\/p>\n

So brief the time we shared<\/p>\n

That each of us shares with others<\/p>\n

And always your wood clogs
\nCrushing cans in Oslo and gardening<\/p>\n

The\u00a0 sheer wit
\nOf the distance you kept and
\nCanny ways of seeing
\nThrough it all<\/p>\n

And that photo of you
\nYoung and long haired
\nIn winter in Montreal<\/p>\n

Toque and scarf
\nOut there in the white winter cold
\nbut \u00a0smiling nonetheless<\/p>\n

Ways of being<\/p>\n

I walk the mountain
\nMount Royal
\nremembering how you
\nSplit the tram ticket
\nSo your friend could travel \u00a0downtown<\/p>\n

Or how Oscar Peterson
\nWould walk ahead of you in
\nthe snow after school
\nwearing his tight mustard yellow jacket
\nOr play piano tunes at lunch time
\nat Montreal High<\/p>\n

Your uncle who had
\nAn industrial accident
\nSteel beam hit his head
\nAnd could never work again
\nNo workers\u2019 compensation back then
\nhe learned to sing instead<\/p>\n

Or your dad Bob Pagan
\nCarving rubber in the depression
\nTo make a washer
\nFor the plumbing<\/p>\n

Locked out
\nin the shed
\nBackyard in Montreal\u2019s east end<\/p>\n

You made your own world
\nApart
\nfrom whatever home\u00a0was<\/p>\n

You caught Marlon Brando in
\nCat on a Hot Tin Roof
\nIn New York
\nwhen they rolled out the
\nStreets on Long Island\u2019s latest
\nsuburbs where you lived then<\/p>\n

Or Charlottenburg in Berlin
\nAll Biedermeier and dark wood panelling
\nWhen Dad offered you
\nOpera glasses
\nAnd you refused
\nCause you needed
\nDishes instead<\/p>\n

Or Kolonaki Square in Athens
\nat a time when you danced with<\/p>\n

Rene Levesque that flirt
\nGeneral Patton\u2019s assistant
\nAnd gave Canadian wool sweaters to the
\nRefugees in Albania<\/p>\n

It was so hard
\nWasn\u2019t it?
\nTo realize a life
\nWhen your life
\nhad few choices
\nA conscript of diplomacy
\nYour children farmed out
\nTo different countries
\nput away<\/p>\n

So to Speak<\/p>\n

Managing the<\/p>\n

cocktail parties and dinners
\nWith hardly a moment
\nto be with yourself<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Rocks and earth
\nScrape the bottom
\nof the old VW
\nIn spring
\nOn the way to the family
\ncottage at Lac Bonin near<\/p>\n

St Pierre de Wakefield<\/p>\n

in the Gatineau<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

You made good at the Red Cross<\/p>\n

As their long term co-ordinator<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s<\/p>\n

The way we remember
\nAll those things\u2026 even now<\/p>\n

Time\u2019s a great
\nDistillery<\/p>\n

With love fragments<\/p>\n

In the big mix<\/p>\n

A little bit of everything<\/p>\n
